Lawmakers to buttress authority over executive agencies

HELENA — Montana’s highest-ranking lawmakers are exploring opportunities to reinforce legislative authority over executive agencies.

The Legislative Council decided on Friday to verse lawmakers in their ability and responsibility to oversee state departments.

Republicans and Democrats on the interim committee agreed lawmakers could do more to communicate with agencies and keep tabs on their rulemaking procedures.

Republican Senate President Debby Barrett helped introduce the topic, saying the legislature has delegated too much power to the executive branch and its numerous agencies
